As far as Brisbane events go, it would be hard to fi nd one more iconic or parochial than the State of Origin night hosted by Corporate Sports Australia. For SOO GAME 2 in the 2008 series, the Keg Room inside XXXX Castlemaine Perkin’s historic brewery at Milton was fi lled with 600 corporate guests, who all like their football, and the occasional beer. As this is a working brewery, conducting an event within the Keg Room entails no small measure of pre-production and planning. From the initial build, through rehearsals, to the show, and through the entire bump out, everything about the event has to run smoothly. It would be one thing for delays or problems to be experienced, but it would be catastrophic should the supply of beer to Queenslanders be disrupted!
The Keg Room, access usually commences the day before and begins with the removal and re-stacking of more than a thousand kegs. Rigging and truss systems are then assembled onsite and installed to cater for the audio, lighting, and projection systems, as well as fl oor to ceiling drape lines. The main stage, which is circular and an impressive 6 metres in diameter, is built in the centre of the venue whilst a small army of people position more than 60 tables and 600 chairs in formation around the outside. Once all the control equipment has been installed, a number of power distribution and system checks are then carried out before the venue is cleared for the night.
The following day small armies of the contracted Keg Room caterer Caxton St Catering and event crew move through the venue as they dress and set tables and install chair covers. Final checks are made before rehearsals. Catering and wait-staff are briefed. All production crew confi rm run sheet timings and test show communication equipment. State of Origin for 2008 is ready to go!
The guests started to arrive from 5.00 pm and as expected were treated to delicious meals and the freshest beer you could imagine. As video highlights of previous battles played on the huge screens around the venue, former and current superstars of the game took to the stage for some insightful commentary. From 7.00 pm the annual pilgrimage to the hallowed surrounds of Suncorp Stadium had begun, and by 8.00 pm the game was well under way. The rest of the night we now know is history. The maroons triumphed emphatically, the Blues capitulated dramatically, and everyone returned to the Keg Room in the best of spirits to see out the night. The winning team on the night? Corporate Sports Australia, XXXX, Caxton Street Catering, and a Noble Event.
