Apart from game night for the State of Origin and Rugby Tests, there are limited times in the year when the gates at the XXXX Castlemaine Perkin Brewery are swung open and guests are welcomed into the inner sanctum of the Keg Room for an event. One of these is longest running lunch in Brisbane, the XXXX Castlemaine Club, a twice yearly tradition, with the other at Christmas – this lunch raises funds for a particular charity on the day and is attended by many of Brisbanes’ best, and we do mean many catering for up to 1000 guests. As sponsor of the XXXX State of Origin Team.
This event is the only one where fans can personally wish their best to the State of Origin team with them present and mingling amongst their fans. This year it took place just before game 2 in the State of Origin series with 6th of June marked down on the calendar as the date for the warm up event to the State or Origin clash, and as with previous years, the lunch proved to be a huge success.
Hosted by the inimitable Paul Vautin, the guest list extended the length and breadth of Brisbane’s corporate and football communities. After a very well received opening performance by the XXXX Angels, Paul then opened the lunch and extended a welcome to the day’s VIP’s, and also to the gathering of some of the biggest names in Origin history. Following this, Nine News’ Heather Foord was then invited to assist in welcoming the XXXX 2008 Stage of Origin Team to the stage, and to rapturous applause, one by one the team members filled the perimeter of the circular stage. The remainder of the lunch was a footy fans smorgasbord and included one on one interviews with the coach, captain, and some of the players, as well as roving interviews from the floor with former Origin greats.
With proceeds from the day going to the Mardi Jackson Foundation, a series of auctions were also conducted, the highlight of which was an opportunity for a photo to be taken with the entire 2008 team. Rounding off the lunch saw comedian Dave Hughes take to the stage and provide everyone with a dose of his unmistakably laconic humour, before the return of Paul to make the presentation to the charity and his final acknowledgements for the day. Following the completion of the lunch, and for those who wanted to remain in high spirits, shuttle buses were then provided to ferry guests to the Caxton Hotel, where we are sure the lunch continued for a good few hours.
Excellent production values were pivotal to the success of this lunch, and a Noble Event was once again responsible for the entire production requirements on the day. As with game nights in the Keg Room, high end lighting and audio systems were installed across a rigging network in the ceiling and provided guests with a very professional event experience. Due to the number of interviews conducted throughout the lunch, in conjunction with video highlights from previous origin matches, this experience had to also extend to the video systems utilised on the night. To this end, four large projection screens were hung in a box formation above the centre stage and offered excellent sightlines to any point in the venue. Roving and fixed camera positions were then employed to relay images to the screens and ensure that not a moment of the live action was missed. In addition to the circular main stage, a massive 140 extra stage modules were brought on site to create a mezzanine level of dining along three walls of the venue.
Apart from adding another element to the overall aesthetic of the room, the use of this extra level provided guests within this area a far improved perspective of the main stage and room environment in general, especially so during the roving interviews from the floor. As any football coach will confirm, success comes from a team effort, and this is also the case with any large event. As he has done for years, Tony Noble from a Noble Event assembled a highly experienced and professional production crew to implement and oversee the requirements, Tom Burke from Caxton St Catering delivered a magnificent menu and XXXX the blizzardly cold fresh beer for this Castlemaine Club lunch. With everyone focused on the same result, the game plan was made clear and the team worked as one to deliver an excellent result for the client, and for the guests.
